May 16th was selected because it is the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, Day of Light activities around the world are few.  One that begins today is the IES Virtual Research Symposium.
