{"id":339,"date":"2015-02-09T13:22:32","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T18:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/designinglight.com\/?p=339"},"modified":"2015-02-14T14:38:20","modified_gmt":"2015-02-14T19:38:20","slug":"best-and-worst-lighting-at-the-grammys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/designinglight.com\/?p=339","title":{"rendered":"Best and Worst Lighting at the Grammy&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, the Grammy Awards are all about the music, but for lighting designers it&#8217;s also about the way the performance are lit. \u00a0Last night showcased some of the best and worst lighting you&#8217;re likely to see on tv this year. \u00a0Among the best was the lighting for Ariana Grande&#8217;s performance of \u00a0&#8220;Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart.&#8221; \u00a0Surrounded by glowing crystals, luminous fog, and a small backlit orchestra all she had to do was stand still and sing. \u00a0The lighting director\u00a0created a beautiful environment of soft light and slowly changing color that was in harmony with the feeling of the music.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"863\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t1Tvd_ry024?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Among the worst lighting was Kanye&#8217;s performance of &#8220;Only One.&#8221; \u00a0The song opened with him standing over a beam of light shooting up from the floor. \u00a0As he sang he moved in and out of the light, but without meaning or intention. \u00a0He was visible at some times and not at others, always with shadows obscuring his face. \u00a0At the beginning of the second verse the music swelled, providing an ideal opportunity to build the light so that he was better lit, but nothing happened. \u00a0It&#8217;s impossible to know why. \u00a0Did he tell the lighting director not to change the lighting?
