{"id":5805,"date":"2026-08-17T09:00:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/designinglight.com\/?p=5805"},"modified":"2026-08-16T06:30:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T10:30:49","slug":"color-rendering-whiteness-and-tm-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/designinglight.com\/?p=5805","title":{"rendered":"Color Rendering, Whiteness, and TM-30"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">I know I often write about color rendering.\u00a0 It\u2019s because most lighting manufacturers and specifiers treat color rendering as a check box item (80 or 90?).\u00a0 I see color rendering as a powerful, valuable design choice that impacts the appearance of a space.\u00a0 This is especially true when using TM-30\u2019s suite of measurements.\u00a0 So, here I go again\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">I recently came across an ad from a luminaire manufacturer that described three versions of a new product line that focuses on color rendering. One version is supposed to \u201cenhance the contrast between colors and whites\u201d. \u00a0Another is supposed to \u201caccent wood, bronze, textiles and darker accents\u201d (so, warm colors, all colors, and dark colors?). \u00a0The third is supposed to \u201cenhance white surfaces\u201d. \u00a0All three versions are described having a CCT of 3000 K and a CRI of 90, and that\u2019s all we\u2019re told.\u00a0 There is no other color rendering information presented in the ad, on the web site, or on the cut sheets.\u00a0 It\u2019s as though somehow 3000 K and 90 CRI are supposed to clearly describe all three color rendering effects. \u00a0CRI \u2013 it\u2019s a hair gel, it\u2019s a toothpaste, and it\u2019s a floor polish! \u00a0Obviously, this is nonsense. \u00a0So, let&#8217;s talk about what&#8217;s really going on here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">Over the years CRI has been erroneously described as measuring the naturalness of a light source, the naturalness of colors, a comparison to daylight, and even a percentage of colors that are rendered (whatever that\u2019s supposed to mean).\u00a0 All of those are wrong.\u00a0 CRI is a fidelity measurement.\u00a0 That is, it compares a light source to its reference source (a black body radiator below 5000 K and a model of daylight at 5000 K and above, and at the exact CCT as the light source in question) and describes how well they match. The reference light source isn\u2019t meant to be considered perfect &#8211; it\u2019s meant to be a light source with well understood color rendering properties. \u00a0A poor match in color rendering results in a low CRI.\u00a0 A better match results in a higher CRI.\u00a0 A CRI of 90 indicates a pretty good, but not exact match.\u00a0 What is the mismatch?\u00a0 What specific colors or color ranges are affected?\u00a0 Are some colors shifted in hue, made less saturated, made more saturated, some combination?\u00a0 We don\u2019t know the answers because the CRI calculation gives us one number, <em>R<\/em><sub>a<\/sub>, not a suite of numbers and\/or graphics that supplement the top line result.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">So, a light source that is 3000 K and 90 CRI <em>might<\/em> have one of the three color rendering properties described by this manufacturer, and other versions of 3000 K and 90 CRI <em>could<\/em> have the other characteristics, but the numbers presented don\u2019t describe or confirm those properties or characteristics <u>at all<\/u>.\u00a0 For that we need to look at TM-30 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">Two of the three descriptions reference the color rendering of white, but there\u2019s no explanation of how this is determined, and that\u2019s a problem.\u00a0 Neither CRI nor TM-30 specifically evaluate white surfaces or materials.\u00a0 There have been several whiteness metrics proposed over the years, beginning in the 1930s.\u00a0 As far as I know, only one has been adopted by a standards setting organization (the CIE whiteness formula from 1986).\u00a0 However, this manufacturer can\u2019t be using the CIE formula because it only uses D65 (a standardized spectra at 6500 K) and the LEDs here are all 3000 K.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">Neither CRI nor TM-30\u2019s <em>R<\/em><sub>f<\/sub> (the fidelity index) say anything about the impact of the spectrum on specific color ranges, such as warm colors.\u00a0 <em>R<\/em><sub>g<\/sub> doesn\u2019t either since it gives us an average shift in saturation across all 99 color samples.\u00a0 To see what color ranges are affected, and how, we need to look at the local hue and chroma shifts (\u201clocal\u201d meaning the color samples falling within each of the 16 hue bins shown in the Color Vector Graphic or CVG).\u00a0 As shown below, a TM-30 intermediate report gives us the CVG and bar graphs of the hue shift (<em>R<\/em><sub>hs<\/sub>) and chroma shift (<em>R<\/em><sub>cs<\/sub>) for each hue bin.\u00a0 The bar graph information is included in the Color Vector Graphic, of course, but some may find the bar graphs easier to read.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5804\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5804\" style=\"width: 2038px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5804 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report.png\" alt=\"TM-30 Intermediate Report\" width=\"2038\" height=\"1154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report.png 2038w, https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report-1024x580.png 1024w, https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report-768x435.png 768w, https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report-1536x870.png 1536w, https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report-863x489.png 863w, https:\/\/designinglight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Intermediate-Report-191x108.png 191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2038px) 100vw, 2038px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TM-30 Intermediate Report<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">So, if the question is, \u201cWhat colors are enhanced by this spectrum?\u201d, and if \u201cenhanced\u201d means made more vivid, the answer is found in the chroma shift bar graph.\u00a0 For any spectra, the color ranges that have a positive chroma shift would be enhanced, while those with a negative chroma shift might be described as being muted, dulled, or grayed.\u00a0 This is true regardless of the material because color rendering is about an object\u2019s color, not its material composition.\u00a0 \u201cTextiles and darker accents\u201d don\u2019t describe a color range, so there\u2019s no way of knowing the impact of a spectra on those materials without also knowing their color.\u00a0 As with whiteness, though, the manufacturer gives us no detailed information, just assurances that these lights are great.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 18.4px; font-size: medium; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;\">Proceed with caution.\u00a0 Don\u2019t accept any of these claims without proof.\u00a0 Get your lighting reps to bring you samples to evaluate before specifying these products.
